It started when I read “Born to Run” by Christopher McDougall. I discovered that I’d been running wrong all this time. I followed that up by starting to train in a pair of sandals that I’d made from sheet Vibram and a leather thong. While training in sandals, I started having pain in my feet. I did some reading online and I followed this up by reading 2 more books about barefoot running; Barefoot Running Step by Step by Barefoot Ken Bob Saxton and Barefoot Running: How to Run Light and Free by Getting in Touch with the Earth by Michael Sandler and Jessica Lee. It’s really important that you work on some foot strengthening exercises and start out slow. Jumping straight into sandals after training in running shoes, and wearing boot, can be dangerous and lead to injury.

Now I run in my homemade sandals all the time. It takes conditioning and getting used to, but even minimal running shoes feel heavy and restrictive. I even tried running in some minimal trail shoes for a little while and ended up changing my stride just enough that it led to knee pain and switched back to my sandals.
